Bhutan Altitude Guide

Altitude in Bhutan: What to Know

Bhutan is known for its breathtaking mountainous landscape, but despite the high altitudes, altitude sickness is relatively uncommon here. Most valleys in Bhutan sit below 2,500 meters, with mountain passes generally just over 3,000 meters. On cultural tours, you’ll rarely reach altitudes higher than 3,500 meters, except for certain itineraries like the ‘Journey Across Bhutan.’

For those planning to trek, the altitudes can range from around 3,500 meters to as high as 5,000 meters. It’s recommended to give yourself at least three days to acclimatize before undertaking strenuous treks or climbs, particularly if you have any lung conditions such as asthma.

If you’re concerned about altitude sickness, it's wise to carry preventative medication like Diamox. Start taking it in advance as a precaution, especially if you plan to venture into higher altitudes. In the rare case that you experience altitude sickness during your trek, it's important to descend to a lower altitude immediately and stay hydrated. Diamox can also be taken alongside Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to alleviate symptoms, which generally improve after a few days.
